CHALLENGE

Our client, a fast-growing global pharmaceutical company, was challenged by the increasing cost and complexity of managing its databases. They and their database managed services vendor struggled to execute initiatives to improve performance, security, and scalability because they could barely keep up with day-to-day operations.

As they planned for a three-fold increase in database instances, from approximately 200 to 600, the team size required to support this growth was untenable. The gray line on the diagram reflects the projected growth in team size from eight to twenty-two resources to support the increased volume of database instances.

Our client needed to rethink managed services…

APPROACH

Clovertex was asked to assess the environment of databases, infrastructure, and their support. Clovertex also spent time learning about the company’s growth objectives and priorities. Clovertex designed an approach and team with both database operations and engineering resources and support for its rapidly expanding AWS cloud infrastructure.

Clovertex’s approach would support the projected growth with substantially fewer resources. The blue line on the diagram reflects Clovertex’s projected growth from seven to twelve resources to support the same three-fold increase in database instances.

Clovertex would make this happen by automating many tasks, reducing ticket counts, aggressively pursuing license cost reductions and efficiently using resources.

Fast-forward, and Clovertex delivered on our approach. Automation and efficient use of technology and people resources enabled our client to achieve performance, security, and scalability objectives while increasing the number of database instances.

Over this period, the average monthly ticket volume dropped from 900 to 500. In total, our client has realized over $2M in savings. Today, Clovertex is managing over 1,000 database instances globally for this client.
